Abstract
To investigate the more efficient method in shortening the time of dwarf apple nursery production, greenwood grafting of apple cv. Megumi on Malus baccata using MM 106 as an interstock was. selected.
Bagging with polyethylene film and paper over the graft union, primarily wrapped with a piece of the film, showed a satisfactory result of complete survivals.
The longer interstocks and the scions taken from the lower part of the same shoot resulted a more vigorous plant, but the length of a scion and the number of attached leaves had no effect on the formation of graft union and vigour.
Storage of scions over a day was detrimental to the healing of graft union, and the optimum time for greenwood grafting is considered to be early or middle of June.
From the late of June, paraffin coating and Balcoat pasting substituted the bagging effects in increasing the percentages of graft union formation and the subsequent growth.
By these methods, production of excellent dwarf apple nursery plants in a year was quite possible.
